ZAHENSKY TOPS MODIFIED TRIPLES FRIDAY AT CLAREMONT
Claremont Motorsports Park August 23 event story
CLAREMONT, N.H. – Brad Zahensky was winless in three 20-lap segments Friday at Claremont Motorsports Park but his trio of strong runs put him atop the chart and into the winner’s circle, the victor of the night’s Sportsman Modified Triple 20s main event.
Super Street ace Brandon Gray, absent a week earlier, stormed to victory Friday at the Thrasher Road speedplant, while Pure Stock hot shoe Kodi Sabins won for the second week in a row. King of the Outlaws Guy Caron won a thriller, and Steve Miller Jr. romped to victory in the Six Shooters.
Points leader Nate Wenzel started up front in the 802 Credit Union presents first leg of the Modified triple 20. The Bay State star led all the way, with Andrew Brousseau riding in his shadow, to top the first segment. Brad Zahensky finished third, which would be important when the night’s final standings were tallied.
Colton Martin wired the second 20-lapper, taking the checkers just ahead of Trevyr Young and Jeremy Zullo, like the first segment, round two was run caution-free.
Entering the final leg, Wenzel, Brousseau and Zahensky were tied atop the leader board, but Brousseau’s night abruptly ended as the pack charged into turn one at the drop of the green. Tires clanked, cars wobbled, and Brousseau’s ride was destroyed in a violent headlong crash into the turn-one wall.
Back under green, round three was all Tyler Leary. Zahensky took second from Wenzel on lap two and then outran him to the checkers, the runner-up in the 20-lapper and the night’s overall winner. Wenzel was second on the night, and Jeremy Zullo third.
Jimmy Zullo and Jason Laffin led a romping, stomping 17-car field of R.E Hinley Super Streets to the green Friday, with Zullo jumping all over the opening lead. Brandon Gray, though, was on a mission.
Charging from row three, Gray took charge on a lap-four restart and simply drove away. Chris Lindquist got up for second on lap nine but, on this Friday night, had nothing for Gray. Coming from tenth, Dave Greenslit impressed in third, with Dylan Zullo fourth and Travis Sykes fifth.
Steve Bly and Jeff Murray were the class of the Outlaws early in Friday night’s 25-lapper. Further back, mired in traffic, was Guy Caron, the cream of this season’s crop, bringing not only a boatload of talent to the game, but also a ride reminiscent of the undefeated Superman car of just a few seasons ago.
Caron got up to third on lap 14 Friday, low-lined into second on lap 20, and set his sights on Bly. He’d edged into first with the white flag in the air but the race’s only caution then reset Bly at the point. Again, though, rocketing low into turn one, Caron took charge and sailed off to victory
Bly’s blockbuster night netted him second, with Murray strong in third. Caron’s latest victory positioned him 91 points ahead of Ben Poland in the race to the 2024 championship.
Ethan Meyette led the Pure Stocks to the green, with rookie sensation Kyle Kenny then powering into the lead on lap two. A lap-five tangle would change the event’s shape for some of the division’s muscle, with David Smith quickly done for the night, and both Andrea St. Amour and Carlos Grenier dashing pitside for band aids. Kodi Sabins, though, was unscathed.
Taking charge on the restart, Sabins, who’d started way back in row six, took charge and rocketed off to his second win in a row, topping this one by a country mile. Kenny was strong in second, just ahead of points leader Keegan Tabor. St. Amour, charging back from her earlier setback, impressed in fourth, and Amy Jaycox completed the all-Vermont top five.
Steve Miller Jr. romped to victory in the Six Shooter 20-lapper. Points leader Steve Miller Sr. was second, and Paul Colburn came home third.
Jason Sands won the Claremont Karting Series Rookie A feature. Hayden Blanchard was second, and Ryder Capps third. Points leader Oakleigh Poisson won the Rookie B event, followed by Keelan LaCourse and Aaliyah Nestervich.
Next Friday, August 30, Claremont Motorsports Park will roar back into action with a full card of NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action including the Cody LaFont Memorial Race and then, two days later, on Sunday, September 1, the storied oval will host a huge event, with the Racers Honoring Racers 76-lap main event atop a blockbuster card including the annual 73-lap Richard Tetreault Super Street Memorial Race. Post time Sunday is 6 p.m.
